PROJECTS

Soil Water and Nutrition (SWAN) Collaboration

Co-funded by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), this project aspires to achieve a step change in grain production in any given season through improved soil fertility and function from new soil management practices.

A large spader

Transforming water and nutrient use efficiency
in WA grain production

Increasing efficiency through novel soil management approaches

Delivering new knowledge and resources to growers and industry

Identifying cost-effective nutrient management strategies

activities

Novel and readily adoptable amelioration approaches

Conducting a suite of experiments involving soil surface and profile reengineering to redefine new benchmarks for water and nutrient use efficiencies across soil types and environments in WA.

Understanding nutrient use and areas for improvement

Surveying the use of macro and micronutrients to target efficiency gains for growers. Of all the nutrients, potassium will lead the research and extension.

Establishment of a development network

Integral to success is engaging like-minded growers to help develop novel amelioration techniques. These groups will be cultivating the tools and processes for achieving the next step in grain production.

Important work of the DPIRD Soil team is the investigation of new techniques for sustainable production.
