Principal Research Scientist David Hall

My role

I am Principal Research Scientist with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) based in Esperance.

My research, over the past 42 years, has focused on soil management options that overcome soil constraints in cropping systems.

My background

I have specific interests in the use of tillage (strategic deep, minimum tillage) and amendments (clay, biochar, compost, lime, mineral mulches and gypsum) and their combinations to overcome physical and chemical limitations in sands and sodic clay soils that impede agricultural production.

Along with my colleagues, this research has resulted in transformational changes to farming practices leading to sustained improvement in crop yields.

It has led to substantial investment by industry (Grains Research and Development Corporation) in soils research in Western Australia.

I have also participated on international projects on sandy soils in Vietnam.

Projects

Soil Water and Nutrition (SWAN) Collaboration: Transforming Water and Nutrient Use Efficiency in WA Grain Production (DAW2407-001SPX)

Key expertise

Identifying soil chemical and physical limitations to crop growth, applying and testing soil management solutions, developing and leading projects with industry, extending information to the agricultural and scientific communities

Qualifications

MRurSc in Soil Management, University of New England

BSc in Agriculture, University of New England
