Technical officer Kinley Tshering

My role

I have recently joined the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) as a technical officer, based in Northam.

I am engaged in the soil reengineering research program within the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)-DPIRD Soil Water and Nutrition (SWAN) Collaboration.

I assist in the implementation of extensive field trials aimed at addressing various deep soil limitations, including compaction, acidity, and inadequate nutrient and water retention.

My responsibilities include coordinating trial logistics, conducting soil and crop sampling, and processing to assess crop and soil responses. My role involves close collaboration with research scientists and field teams to test and refine strategies for soil profile reengineering aimed at enhancing water and nutrient use efficiency.

My background

I began working as researcher in 2004 with the Agriculture Research and Development Centre in Bhutan in the field of horticulture and soil science.

I moved to Western Australia in 2019 to pursue my PhD and graduated in 2024. My PhD research was focused on mechanisms involved in enhancing the nitrogen use efficiency, yield and protein concentration in wheat, with the combined application of slow-release rock mineral fertiliser and microbial consortium inoculant in sandy soil.
